In which Kieron Gillen explores role-playing games, most particularly D&D, in the most meta way possible. So much so that this series spawned a actual RPG. A group of teens are sucked into the world they are playing, but it’s more than that: the world is composed of all the ideas that went into the creation of that place. Tolkien, Wells, Gibson, le Guin; all different facets of a D20 die.

Hans' art is an odd thing: her set pieces can be breathtaking, as can the emotion she captures on a close up, and the colours are spectacular. But sometimes the characters slip and become a little vague or muddy.

It’s typically Gillen in that you have to latch onto the speech pattern and many, many references, but once you do the story is rewardingly complex. Particularly if you’re an RPG fan—in fact it may be required?
