The first full length novel in the series, reuniting Murderbot with ART and introducing ART’s humans for the first time. Most engaging is the interplay between the two intelligences, and the shenanigans they have to perform—such as creating replicas and injecting them as self-learning killbots. to overcome the colonist/alien challenge laid before them. We also see another SecUnit freed from its governor, which expands the scope of what might be possible within Well’s universe dramatically.

A second reading vastly improved by having read the preceding novellas.
