Rating: ★★★☆

Having played the first two games, I wanted to go to the source. It was worth it, if only to marvel at how close the games hew to the books. I was surprised how often I was surprised by how Sapkowski turns typical fantasy tropes on their head, all the while reinforcing many of those same tropes. Geralt is a marvellous creation, as are the various regulars that surround him, and it’s such a rich and deep world that it’s no wonder the games feel that way. It’s philosophical (what is a monster) and doesn’t always turn to swords; the dialogue often spins off in unexpected directions instead.

Four stars but for the fact that all the men are men and all the women are half-naked ‘girls’.
