Creating an original Batman is one of the great challenges in comics, and Snyder has done it. A super compelling reimagining of the icon of Batman, plus all the way up and down his food chain from Gordon to the villains. Only Gotham City itself seems unchanged. Hard to know if it can maintain the momentum of these early issues, but they are keepers.
Collecting issues #1-6.

A stunning new series from Gillen and Wijngaard which examines superheroes as superpowers equivalent to a nuclear-armed state. Gillen stated he wanted to explore the irony that if superheroes were to appear, the last thing the world could afford would be for them to fight each other. So here is a superhero comic where fighting is off-limits, unlike just about every other hero comic ever. The characters are great and the art perfectly matched.

I so loved Fraction’s Hawekeye, so the news he was doing Batman was pretty exciting. The characterisation is newish, making Batman a lot more human and a lot less Dark Knight, but it’s still Batman, and the confusion of wild characters and idiotic criminals feels a bit like a photocopy. But the love interest angle is nicely done, and there’s an intriguing new villain in amongst the regulars. Alas after six issues I was ready to abandon this series and then…
